Joining the Lab

We are always looking for talented and motivated researchers interested in developing computational design and fabrication tools that allow the creation of novel 3D objects and products. Students and researchers with a background or interest in Robotics, Digital Fabrication, HCI, Design + Manufacturing, and GenAI will almost always find active projects of interest. Please see below for directions for both external applications (as PhD, Postdoc, or visiting student) and current UW students (both undergraduate and graduate).

EXTERNAL OPENINGS

We are always open to applications from talented researchers and students to join the lab, and are actively recruiting:

  • PhD Students

  • Postdocs

  • Visiting Masters/Graduate students

If interested, please email Martin Nisser (nisser@uw.edu) detailing your interest areas and background.

UW STUDENTS

We continuously accept undergraduates and graduate students from a range of disciplines to participate in research for credit / thesis. Research involvement will typically involve one or more of the topics below.

Software

  • GenAI for Design

  • Developing user interfaces to design physical objects

  • Developing algorithms for assembling, folding and printing 3D objects

  • User studies to inform the development of new design tools for manufacturing

Hardware

  • Physical prototyping (CAD, 3D printing, Machining)

  • Electronics (Breadboarding, PCB design, embedded systems / Arduino)

  • CAM and control of fabrication machines

Contact

If interested, and to learn more about current projects, please email Martin Nisser (nisser@uw.edu) and include:

  • A resume

  • Your availability for the current/next quarter (min 10 hours/week)

  • A few sentences on what you’re interested in & relevant experience

  • A confirmation that you can participate in research for credit
